1. Siligardi M (2000).

Abstract: The compartment's interested in the environmental problems need tools to facilitate the evaluation both the quality of the environment and its modiflcations, offering elements easily to be understood. Such tools are the environmental indexes, developed using environmental indicators, that for their specific characteristics should offer a high capabality of synthetic representation.

Varied indexes are developed in bilogical studies, created with tlle most different indicators, suppling models of evaluations tied to the time response and the ecological relation of the index.

The use of bioindication metods is recent, but it has assumed a lot of importance and relability in the definition of the environmental stress more than every other analytical methods. The derived knowledge furnishes a base to the study, the control, the management and the maintenance of the ecosystems that from the alpine environment.

3. Cristofolini F, Gottardini E (2000).

Abstract: Lichens as biomonitors of air quality: first results at Trento (North Italy)

After briefly outlining the importance of biological monitoring in general, the use of lichens for monitoring air pollution is described. Particular emphasis is placed on the characteristics and potential of lichens as bioindicators. A case study based on data from 22 monitoring station in the city of Trento using the Lichens Biodiversity index (BL) is given. An air quality map was prepared and interpreted.

Abstract: Monitoring of the air quality by means of lichens in the municipality of Mori

The monitoring of the air quality by means of lichens in the municipality of Mori has been based on a preliminary floristic study and on the use of the active monitoring, by means or exposition tablets with explants of Hypogymnia physodes. The preliminary study showed a situation of poverty of lichens species, that has been also found in the near city of Rovereto and in other city centers. The factors that influence this situation could be microclimatic, like the insufficent humidity, the absence of suitable substrate, the excessive temperature range, but also of anthropic origin (atmospheric pollution). Using the lichen explants and the results of the floristic study it was possible to distinguish two zones, characterized one by the presence of native lichens and light damages of the exposed thalli (stations 1, 2, 3, 5), the other by conditions of "lichen desert" and greater percentages of damage (stations 4, 6, 7, 8). The best situation was found near stations 3 (Cal di Ponte), where the presence of Parmelia sulcata is a good quality index of the air. Moreover on the plants of the main square was found the greater number of species and also the minor percentage of loss of thallus. The other collected species were nitrophilous and resistant to the pollution. Anyway their presence and wariety must be considered positively, in relation to the micoclimatic conditions. The lichens need hight humidity conditions, guaranteed by the presence of the garden and of little groups of plants that contribuite with the transpiration to avoid the lowering of the relative humidity and excessive thermal excursions.

The worst situation was found close to the station 4. Here the naturall lichens were absent and the esplants evidenced serious damages. The situation of Mori is much similar to that one found in Rovereto in a previous study (MATASSONI, ZORER, 1987). The percentage of damage of the thalli reached similar values after six months of exposure. This results are encouraging if compared with those of the previous decade in Bolzano (BENDETTA, 1977), where, in the course of a similar study, the samples of Hypogymnia physodes died after a mounth. However Hufnagel and Türk (1998) showed a remarkable increase (until 16%) of the thalli after exposure in the city of Salisburgo.

5. Guido M (2000).

Abstract: Monitoring in forest environments asing arthropods

Arthropods show a high sensitivity to environmental changes and thus they can be a useful tool for monitoring and assessing the ecological effects of human activities on grassland and forest ecosystems. In particular, arthropods give rapid responses to the effects (both on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning) of land-use changes. Possible applications of the use of such invertebrates in ecological assessment have been stressed by presenting some examples: the use of Orthoptera as biological indicators in the assessment of the ecological effects of the abandonment of alpine grasslands; the study of carabid communities from beech coppices of different age and proditctivity in order to evaluate the potential of carabids as biological indicators of forest conditions, especially productivity and ecological efficiency; the use of non-target arthropods in monitoring the effects of chemical treatments against ticks in forest areas.

7. Ambrosi P, Confalonteri M, Salvadori C (2000).

Abstract: Biomonitoring in two permanent sites of Trentino's forests

Pollution, anthropogenic stress, land-use modifications have been causing  environment changes, with related consequences, which are not fully understood yet. Several activities have been carried out in Trentino to identify and quantify the various factors that interact in this forest ecosystem change. In the last ten years two selected forest stands, localed in the province, have been studied according to the interdisciplinary Integrated Monitoring Programme (IMP) standard metthods. The reported biomonitoring examples showen no evidence of stress phenomena due to local or transborder air pollution. So far, results demonstrate that climate change, seasonal variation and previous antropogenic activities have certain specific impact on the general haalth of the monitored ecosystems.

8. Scrinzi G (2000). Reti neturali. Intelligenza Artificiale e foreste

Abstract:  Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) open an interesting alternative to Regression and Expert Systems in mathematical and statistical modelling, and in multivariate classification of biological phenomena. Althrough the first neural models were devised since the early post-war period, within the scientific environments of Artificial Intelligence, only in the early nineties it saw a development of their use in advanced technologies and in several sectors in which exigencies of forecast, simulation and classification do exist. In the forest context neural models are having their first operative applications almost exclusively in North-America.

In 1999 The ISAFA Forest Management department has started up a specific reserch project on possible applications of neural modeling in the forest sector. The studies so carried out, in addition to some experimental applications in forest planning and biometrics, give evidence of very good prespectives for the neural networks usage in forest environment.

This paper, featured keeping in mind a popular purpose, draws a framework of the ANN that, even if brief and perfunctory, could maybe result useful to foresters who will probably be required to know and properly use this new kind of models.
